Chapter 8
Adderleaft carefully tiptoed his way out of the warriors den, making sure as to not bother anyone. Once outside he shivered. It was a cold night tonight, and it looked as if it might snow soon too. Looking back one more time at the den he just left he padded over to the medicine cats den.
He carefully walked inside, instantly seeing a small shivering shape in the nest as far away from the entrance as possible. He made quick work of walking over to Sparrowflight, and as soon as he was there he laid down next to the smaller tom.
"Adderleaf?" Wheezed Sparrowflight, turning his head slightly to see the red warrior better. "What are you doing here?"
"I came to see you." Said the spotted tom, leaning in and nuzzling the others cheek. "I missed you."
"I missed you too." Said the browned furred tom, head leaning on towards the older cat. "It's lonely here."
Adderleaf nodded. "I bet it is. Good thing I'm here then!"
There was no verbal response, but he counted the purring as a good enough answer. The two just stayed like that for a long time, Sparrowflight tucked into Adderleaf's side as the other enjoyed the blissful silence. The shivering that Sparrowflight had been doing earlier had thankfully stopped, which let him just rest peacefully for the most part. "How long will you be staying?" He asked eventually, turning to fully face Adderleaf.
"Judging by the weather? All night." And he wasn't lying. Just like he thought it had started snowing, with a vengeance at that.
"Good." Purred Sparrowflight, pressing closer to the warm body of the red spotted tom. "I like you."
"I like you too." Parroted Adderleaf, licking gently at the top of the violet eyed cats head.
Adderleaf fell asleep soon after that, the warrior being emotionally exhausted from all that had happened through the day. Though due to his sickness, Sparrowflight didn't find sleep as easily but he did eventually fall asleep.

Icepaw was roused from his sleep by the gentle nudging of a paw against his side. He tried to bat away the paw, but he missed every swipe. "Get up Icepaw. It's important!"
He blinked his eyes eyes open reluctantly to come face to face with Redpaw, who was barely standing a hairlengths away from him. Icepaw reared back from the bigger apprentice, ears flat against his head. "Redpaw! What is wrong with you?" He looked out the den and saw that it was still dark outside. "It's not even dawn!"
"I know, I know. But I need to talk to you now." Icpaw looked at the black-and-white tom incredulously, not getting what was so important that the other needed to wake him at this time, but indicated for Redpaw to explain anyways. "Before I say it, can you promise not to tell anycat about this if you say no?"
"What do you have planned now?" Groaned Icepaw. Not letting the other talk he added: "Fine! Yes I promise what you say now stays between the two of us no matter what."
"I'm wondering if you want to go with me to search twolegplace for any lungwort."
"I'm sorry, what?" Asked Icepaw slowly. "Did-did you just suggest we leave the territory to look for lungwort in twolegplace? We'll get killed or captured!"
"You say that as if getting captured is worse." Deadpanned Redpaw.
"Because it is!"
Redpaw shook his head at his friend. "Of course. I mean what did I expect? Your mentor is Wrensong after all."
"What's that supposed to mean?" Hissed Icepaw, fur bristling in defense for his mentor.
The other apprentice brushed his tail against the brown toms back. "Calm down, I didn't mean any harm by it. But even you must realize that he has his own way of seeing and saying things."
"True." Coincided Icepaw, having to admit that his mentor wasn't really like the others. Though he was different in a good way.
Redpaw nudged him gently in the side. "Now back to business. Do you or do you not want to go with me?"
The smaller apprentice sat quite for a long time, really thinking through what he was being asked. Was it really worth leaving everything behind for a cat he really didn't know all too well? Sparrowfligh seemed like a nice cat and the kits were nice to have around and play with, and one of clans most respected warriors, Greenclaw, had taken a liking to him. But did he, Icepaw, want to go with Redpaw for this? He really didn't, but he also didn't want anyone to die, and more so he didn't want Redpaw to die or get captured all alone and away from his clan. Well not all decisions are easy to make, now are they?
"I'll go with you."
"Really?" Asked Redpaw, a bit shocked that his friends had said yes. "You didn't seem so sure before."
Icepaw rolled his eyes as he stood up and walked towards the entrance to the den, motioning for the black-and-white tom to follow. "I thought it over, and decided this is the best thing I could do for the clan. And also for myself."
"The first I get, but the second I'm a bit lost on." Said Redpaw, walking nearly side by side with Icepaw by now, and they were both a few tail-lengths from the camp entrance.
"I couldn't live with myself if I let a clanmate die when I could have done something." Admitted the brown pelted apprentice, eyes glancing back at his friend. He froze as he spotted the person behind them.
Seeing the others wide eyes and frozen state he turned around too, as soon as he did his eyes grew wide too. "Turtlestar! Um, what brings you out here?"
The Spruceclan leader laughed at the apprentices dumbfounded and shocked faces. "Hello you two. Now, if you don't mind me asking, what are the two of you doing?"
"Uhm, we're going for a walk to stretch our legs?" The answer-that-was-totally-not-more-of-a-question sounded so bad before Redpaw had even said it,actually it sounded worse out loud then in his head.
"Oh? And you were not about to sneak out and go looking for lungwort in twolegplace?" Challenged Turtlestar playfully, mirth dancing around in his green eyes.
"...Maybe." Was the whispered reply from the red eyed apprentice.
Icepaw stepped up here. "You can't stop us from searching for lungwort. Sparrowflight needs it now and going too twolegplace for it is our best chance to get it." The thick furred tom paused for a few moments before adding, "And how did you know exactly what we had planned?"
Their leader smiled at them as he sat down, motioning for the other two to also do so-which they did. "Firstly, I know he needs it now, and I know that twolegplace is the only place to get it. Secondly, you weren't being very quiet, but you also weren't loud either, and anycat who wasn't sleeping could hear you. I am one such cat." The two looked away embarrassed after Turtlestar said that. He ended their suffering, well he at least made it less so, by continuing to talk. "Lastly, neither of you are leaving the territory to go to twolegplace."
The two looked ready to protest but the elder cat powered on before they could. "And I know a way to get lungwort from twolegplace without having you two running off to Starclan knows where."
"And that is?" Pressed Icepaw, tail flicking curiously.
Turtlestar smiled, ear flicking in amusement. "Cypressstar."
"The Willowclan leader? She can help us with getting lungwort?" Asked Redpaw, extremely confused. "But didn't you get back from Willowclan empty handed?"
"Trust me, Redpaw, I know she can help us with this." Reassured Turtlestar. He then stood up and walked to usher the two apprentices back to their den. "Now you two go back and sleep, I'll fix this in a few sunrises."
Too tired to protest, but their leaders' gentle nudging and soothing words made them head back to their nests to rest. The big gray-brown tom then padded to the tree stump and laid down on it, he wasn't risking the two running off.
It didn't take long for two silvery shapes to manifest to manifest next to him and sit down. The bigger Starclan cat looked down at him with what could only be described as pride, and the gentle nuzzle to his head just made that more apparent. The smaller was more focused on the medicine cats den, which wasn't lost on Turtlestar.
"Don't worry. As I told Icepaw and Redpaw, I know how to get him the lungwort he needs." The green eyed tom was surprised when the star cat shook their head and motioned to the den again. "Do you want me to go look in the den?" A nod was all he needed to be standing up again, what was even the point with sitting or laying down at this point? and walking there.
Turtlestar smiled once he popped his head inside and he could see the sleeping forms of Adderleaf and Sparrowflight. He watched as the smaller Starclan cat walked over to their den and nuzzled their nose against the sick one of the two, which made said cat shiver a bit at the cooler touch the dead cat gave off upon touch.
He didn't stay long and was soon making his way back to his den. The Starclan cats slowly disappeared with every step until they were completely gone, which was just a few steps from the leaders den. Once in his nest Turtlestar was out within just a few heartbeats, much to his relief.
Tomorrow could be the day they got the help Sparrowflight needed, and he wasn't going to take any chances and be tired when it happened. This was life or death, and he'd had enough of death.
